Structural Detailing Using Software (Including Ductile Detailing as per IS: 13920)
26th June, 2009

Reinforcement detailing of structural component, Joints and supports is very important for achieving the desired structural performance and load transfer in RCC structures. It is both, a science and an art

Today, with structural becoming more and more complex, detailing has assumed significance like never before. The provision of ductile detailing as per IS : 13920 have also becomes imperative and hold the promise to prevent sudden collapse while allowing significant deflections and cracking during major earthquakes

Structural software has come a long way from its Initial role of solving large computational problems to catering to today's needs of automation, user friendliness, detailed drawings and end - to- end performance. There is no wonder, then that today's structural designers are looking for software which would take as much load off their heads in as little times as possible.

This seminar will start with a session  on the requirement of ductile detailing an d then illustrate how modern structural software can carry out analysis and design to today's structures  and can seamlessly proceed to produce structural drawi9ngs in conformity with IS : 13920.

STRUDS - a software developed by Soft Tech Engineers Pvt Ltd, Pune is a tools for structural analysis, design & detailing of RC framed buildings. Various Clauses of IS: 13920 (1993) for ductile detailing have been implemented in STRUDS along with generation of structural drawings. This will be demonstrated using a live example of an RCC building.

Manpower Crunch - A Challenge in Construction Industry
27th December, 2008

The present decade has seen an unprecedented growth to construction activity in India. Today's construction projects are not only more complex than before but are also more complex than before but are also more demanding for better quality, exacting standards and times bound completion. But are we geared up to handle the opportunities that are coming our way? What do we need to successfully execute today's construction projects?

The answer is trained manpower.

Be it consultancy, construction management or supervision of work, today it is very difficult to get competent and trained personnel. This crunch, in number as well as quality of manpower, is experienced at all levels… The problem becomes even acute when we look for special or multidisciplinary skills

What are the causes for such a manpower crunch? At the national level, What can we do about this? At the must be handling this situation in his own way. What can we from the experience of our peers?

This seminar will provide a forum wherein the speakers and participants can share their views and experiences. There will be deliberations from the following sectors;

  • Structural Designers & Architects
  • Project management Consultant
  • Developers & Contractors
  • Corporate & Govt. Organizations
It is expected that the deliberations would lead to a white paper, which would clearly define challenges and suggest solutions.

An evening seminar on "Post Tensioned Slabs"
8th October, 2008

Details

slabs are pre-stressed concrete floor slabs (with or without beams) for buildings They have been in practice in the development countries for more than two decades. However, it is only recently that we find regular grids, they provide several advantages over reinforced concrete (RC) slabs, such buildings, technology parks, malls places of exhibition & entertainment act, PT slabs not only provide large column ferry spaces ( many times without beam projections) for flexibility of usage but they can be economical also. With specialist agencies and software available, RC slabs some situations. The seminar will consist of talks and technical deliberation on the emerging concept.   BBR (INDIA) LTD.  is one of the specialist sub- contracting companies in the field of pre-stressed concrete. It is a subsidiary of BBR systems, Switzerland and has been in existence in India since 1986. BBR (India)Ltd. has carried out design execution of several PT slab projects in India. The evening seminar is being sponsored by them.

“To guide the structural engineers for the efficient planning, analysis, design and detailing of foundations for high rise buildings.”
23rd September, 2006

About the seminar

Many high rise building are coming up in and around Mumbai. Due to scarcity of space in the island city, more tall structures are being planned. Shortly, Mumbai will have the tallest building in India. Planning and designing the high rise building is a complex and challenging task. The structural frame is paid more attention to, but the foundation is equally important. Foundation for the high rise structures is always a big challenge for the structural, civil & geotechnical engineers. The problem becomes acute due to requirement of two of three basements for parking. Deep excavation for basements is another challenging job for the civil engineers. This needs to be tackled very  carefully keeping in mind safety of adjacent structures and also the stability of deep excavations. Depending upon the strata available, either pile foundation with pile caps or mat foundation is generally adopted for carrying heavy vertical loads and seismic forces.

Various aspects of geotechnical parameters, deep excavations and suitability of different foundation systems for high rise building will be discussed . Modeling of the foundation systems, analysis ,design, detailing and construction aspects, along with case studies will be discussed. Eminent geotechnical and structural engineers like Dr. Nayak , Dr. Mhaiskar, Dr. Nori, Eng. Kamal Hadkar. Ms. Alpa Sheth, Eng. Jaydeep Wagh, Prof. Sundaram will share their experience.

Structural Detailing In RCC Buildings
26th May, 2006

About the Seminar

Detailing of structural components, joints and supports is very important for achieving the desired structural performance and load transfer in an RCC building. There are two requirement of good detailing. First, it should ensure that the assumptions made during structural modeling are properly translated into construction. Second, it should ensure unambiguous instructions to the contractor so that very little is left to “ good construction practices.” Detailing is both, an art and a science.

For years, detailing has been largely synonymous with reinforcement detailing. However in today’s context, it encompasses a lot many other things such as seismic considerations, provisions for services & equipment, connections, construction sequence, soil-structure interaction and use of special products. Good structural detailing is the hallmark of a good consulting engineer.

This seminar has been organized by ISSE in association with the Institution of Engineers, MSC. It has been designed to address various aspects of structural detailing through deliberations in the form of first hand experiences and case studies. Broadly the following areas shall ne covered:

  • Foundation & Substructure
  • Superstructure
  • Checking at site
  • Structural rehabilitation
  • Software for detailing
  • Special products & materials

Optimizing Structural Steel Design
20th December, 2003

For the first time in India, parallel flange sections are begging produced and made available in local markets by M/S. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (JSPL) With this heartening step of JSPL, the Indian scenario of available structural steel sections will undergo much better change M/s. Girdhari Agrawal & Co. well make these sections available to the local market.

Structural Engineers in our country, who strived for optimization in Structural Steel design, were so far handicapped by non- availability of these sections, which were readily available in western countries.

JSPL has taken up the challenge to produce these parallel flange sections & have set up a totally imported plant in Regard city, Chhattisgarh state, in technical collaboration with NKK of Japan at a capital cost of RS. 1,600 cores.

JSPL being a grass root level plant, having its own

  • Iron ore mines
  • Largest coal based Sponge Iron Plant in the world
  • Captive power plant
  • Sophisticated Controls in production of steel as well as in rolling of sections.
