is 9th July, 1998. On that day Indian Society of Structural Engineers (ISSE)
was formed as Public Trust, under able directions of Eng. R. L. Nene.
Inauguration Day is 29th January, 1999.The
inauguration was done at the hands of Eng S. G. Shirke, Managing Director
of M/S Siporex. We started with membership of 100 engineers and today
we have more than 800 engineers enrolled with us! |
| BACKGROUND : |
| The Profession
in India The Structural Engineering Profession in India, in real sense, dates back to 1935. But there was no organization in India solely dedicated and devoted to the cause of the Structural Engineering Profession. Many structural engineers felt the need of such an organization, for years. Involvement of a Structural Engineer The share of the structural work in a building may be 35 to 60 % from point of view of the cost. But from the point of view of the performance, the share of the structural stability is much much higher. Just as in a human body where the bones and muscles share a great performance value, so also in buildings, the structural frame controls the same task. The Structural Engineer should be given free choice in determining the geometry of the structure. His involvement right from the inception of a project should be valuable. It is therefore appropriate that the Structural Engineer is engaged directly by the private as well as public sector. Recognition As stated above, there was no statutory recognition to the profession till early 70s. A need for a professional body of practicing architects and engineers was felt and thus in 1975, the Practicing Engineers, Architects, Town Planners Association was founded. The recognition of the Structural Engineers by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai ( MCGM ) was accepted in 1977; thanks to the guidance and help we received from the then Director of Engineering, Eng. J. R. Patwardhan. But still a statutory recognition throughout the country is awaited. Engineers' Bill is still pending. FORMATION OF THE INDIAN SOCIETY OF STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS On the basis of the prevailing state of the practice mentioned above, a professional body solely dedicated and devoted to the cause of Structural Engineers in India, was needed. The Indian Society of Structural Engineers was therefore founded in response to unique problems plaguing the Structural Engineering Profession for years. The goal of the Society is to enhance the dignity of the profession and to define suitable norms for the professional responsibility and remuneration thereby bringing about brotherhood and unity, among the fraternity. AIMS & OBJECTS The Society primarily has aims & objects as follows: To safeguard and advance the common interests of the Society. To spread around the useful advanced theoretical and practical knowledge and information. To act as prime representative to the various statutory organizations including State and Central Governments, for the common professional interests of the Society. To make rules and regulations and take other incidental actions to give affiliations to other like minded organizations. To modify and / or formulate any other additional aims and objects, as the circumstances demand. IMPORTANT ISSUES 1. Format of Design Parameters, giving salient features assumed in structural analysis. 2. Methodology for Proof checking of structural design. 3. Methodology of Technical Audit of structural design. 4. Functions & Responsibilities of Structural Engineer. 5. Scrutiny of the current forms of certificates. OUR INTENTIONS 1. To restore the desired status to the Structural Engineer in construction
industry and to create awareness about profession. 3. To get easy registration with Government, Corporations and similar organizations all over India, for our members. 4. To reformulate Certification policies adopted by various authorities, to remove anomalies. 5. To convince all Govt & Semi Govt bodies for directly engaging Structural Engineer for his services. 6. To disseminate information in various fields of Structural Engineering,
to all members. |

intricacies, and importance of shear walls in high rise buildings. |
| OUR ACHIEVEMENTS: |
| The insertion and modification of Bye Law 77
in Cooperative Society Act regarding Structural Audit of old buildings to
be done by Engineers, has been due to persistent efforts of ISSE.
Due to the proper efforts of Pune District Centre of ISSE, the issuing of new structural engineer’s license for region of Pune Municipal Corporation will be subject to the recommendation of PDC. |
